Van Kessel Jan (1612 -1679 Antwerp, Belgium).

Flemish painter. Member of the Antwerp art guild (since 1645). Successor of Jan Bruege's, his grandfather's traditions. Painted flowers, insects, allegorical scenes in which he combined detailed images of fauna species and the four elements. Creating artworks the master of the finest details Van Kessel applied knowledge derived from scientific papers, which helped him to achieve almost the photo precision of his images. Jan van Kessel's works are represented in collections of the Hermitage, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium and the Harvard Museum of Fine Arts.
