Claude-Joseph Vernet

Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714, Avignon - 1789, Paris).

French painter. Father of Karl Vernet and grandfather of Oras Vernet. Studied in Italy under Bernardino Ferdzhoni, became one of the most outstanding landscape painters of his time. In 1754-1762 under the king’s order painted a series of pictures "Ports of France”. His large canvases were obtained as the decoration of palaces across all Europe. The artist’s works are in the Louver (Paris), many museums in Europe and private collections in Russia.
