Lenbach, Franz fon

Lenbach, Franz fon (1836, Shrobenhauzen, Bavaria – 1904, Munich).

Known as a central figure of the Munich art life of the late 19th century. During 1853-1857 studied at Munich Academy of Arts under K.T. fon Piloti. Worked in Italy and Spain. During 1878-1879 was creating a portrait of Reichschancellor of Germany Otto fon Bismarck to the order of the Berlin National Gallery and since became a “Bismarck’s painter”. In 1901 became the first president of the Munich Association of Artists.
