Sapunov Nickolay Nickolaevich (1880, Moscow – 1912, Terioki, near St. Petersburg).
He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, and worked at the same time in the scene shop of the Imperial Bolshoy Theater. In 1898 he was one of the first students in the School’s landscape studio, where I.I. Levitan was his teacher. In 1902 he entered the studio of portrait and genre painting guided by V.A. Serov and K.A. Korovin, and in 1903, after a European tour, continued his training in A.A. Kiselev’s studio in the Higher College of Arts associated with the Academy of Arts.
He often worked for theater, creating d?cor for the performances of S.I. Mamontov’s Private Opera, Tragedies Theater, V.F. Komissarzhevskaya Theater, the studio of the Moscow Arts Theater. He is an outstanding figure in the Russian Symbolism, well-known for his landscapes and still lives painted in the spirit of theater d?cor.
In 1904, he participated in the “Alaya Rosa” (‘Scarlet Rose’) exhibition in Saratov, in 1907, he was one of the organizers of the “Golubaya Rosa” (‘Blue Rose’) exhibition and symbolist society. He contributed to the Moscow symbolist magazine, “Vesy” (‘Balance’).
The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, in many regional museums.
