“ONE HUNDRED SISKINS FLY OFF THE BRANCHES” XXth century artworks in the SOVCOM Art Gallery, Sergey Safonov, “Back Home!” Newspaper Tabloid, No. 157 (32), Friday, September 1st, 2006

It goes without saying that full coverage of the topic in question may only be done by the corresponding department of the Tretyakov Gallery, but it is reasonable to underline again: hand-made drawings are valued for their originality, significance, and the reflection of a unique motion of its creator’s hand. It does not matter which drawing tool has been used by this hand – a fountain pen, a pencil or a brush. The exposition reminds of some famous names. Two undated sketches of actors toggeries were produced by Lev Bakst – a member of “The World of Art” community, who at the beginning of the previous century designed dйcor for performances of Sergey Diaghilev’s troupe in Paris, made drawings for magazines “Scales”, “Apollo”, and who moved from Russia to Western Europe after 1917 but remained a true Russian artist. Boris Grigoryev whose four pencil drawings are exhibited in close vicinity to Bakst’s drawings moved to France five years earlier than Bakst and became famous for his nostalgic series “Raseya” and other drawings. In the SOVCOM Art Gallery exposition you can find his charcoal drawings “The Scene in a Bawdy House” and “Molls” (1917) as well as portraits of Russian workers of national culture – Serge Lifar and Ilia Mashkov. Soviet art which is the major focus of the gallery is presented in full: visitors will have opportunity Vladimir Suteev’s illustrations to Sergey Mikhalkov’s book about siskins, hedgehogs and other animals, drawings by Tatiana Mavrina and Robert Falk as well as “The Assault” by Alexander Labas.
