«Russian and Western European art» at «Sovcom» auction. AFISHA. Kommersant – Weekend, № 8, 07.03.2012.

Auction House SOVCOM holds grand sales, covering several kinds of collecting at a time. A bit of production graphics and applied art, European interior painting are likely to attract the broadest public of buyers. But the principal content of the sales is, of course, Russian“classical”art.

At the forefront of the sales is “Amsterdam on a Moonlight Night”, spectacular landscape byAlexey Bogolyubov, coming from the collection of Alexander III and once kept in the Anichkov Palace (such provenance is characteristic of the best artist’s works). The canvas is valued at 300-430 thousand US dollars. The section of the sales with works devoted to the theme of hunting seems interesting: it has the essential snow-covered forest by count Vladimir Mouraviev, portrait of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich in the hunting field by Rudolf Frentz (valued at substantial 170-250 thousand US dollars) and more democratically valued elk, fox and wolf “huntings” by other Russian artists.

In the section of soviet painting and graphics, several drawings by Moses Levin, scene-designer who used to work with Meyerhold, come into notice. Three drawings portray Vladimir Mayakovsky, sitting in a cafe (see photo): the artist was obviously impressed by the poet’s appearance and expressiveness of his moves (from1 to 5 thousand US dollars).
