The village of Mstera in the Vladimir region has been known since the 20s of the 17th century thanks to the masters of the Epiphany Monastery. In the holy monastery they wrote "petty letters" - miniature icons, later they taught the skill to the villagers. The life of the Russian village on the lacquer miniature, the artists of Mstyora began to depict in the 1920s, when the icons were almost on the verge of being banned. New subjects were dictated to artists by the October Revolution. They did not start making caskets here immediately, first they painted wooden products with tempera. But they were poorly bought, but the painted lacquer boxes from the artel "Proletarian Art" were to the liking of the buyers. The masters of Mstera observed the Old Believer traditions of icon painting, painted in the Dutch landscape and lubok styles, and depicted Persian ornaments. Mstyora artists avoided a black background, which is why the miniature world of boxes seemed especially clean and festive. This is how his own unique style was born.
