At our Soviet Posters for Sale exhibition one can see posters by outstanding graphic/poster artists of the 1930s through to 1960s. In the collection presented on display in SOVCOM Gallery, the selection of posters of the mid-20th century (including those by members of the famous Poster Artists' Partnership - Russian: Tovarishchestvo Plakatistov) occupy a special place. Soviet posters have more than once appeared on display at SOVCOM; however, such a massive collection is offered for the first time. Popularity of such works has grown of late, and it is not surprising: in the middle of the previous century, posters were the main instrument of propaganda and promotion. For this reason, they had to be capable of compelling and holding the spectators' attention. Not infrequently, prominent graphic artists and painters, who were real experts in their vocation, became authors of posters.   

Thus, for example, participants of the Kukryniksy creative team (Mikhail Kupriyanov, Porfiri Krylov, and Nikolai Sokolov) were full members of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, People's Artists of the USSR, and Heroes of Socialist Labor. The artists managed to develop a unique and recognizable style. Their works were incredibly popular. They were published, on a regular basis, in Pravda newspaper and in Krokodil magazine, which had a circulation of millions of copies. The SOVCOM collection includes a representative sample of a topical poster entitled «The Clique of Clergy is a Support for Kulaks», which is an example of the team's early works.

A poster that is worth special mentioning is the one by a very interesting artist (who was also among the authors of the color photomontage art) Gustav Klutsis. The poster is entitled «Without Heavy Industry We Will Not Be Able to Build Any Industry», and is a bright example of Constructivism - a phenomenon, which appeared after the October Revolution as a new, advanced, and proletarian artistic philosophy. Today, works by the Constructivists arouse much interest on the part of collectors both in Russia and in the entire world.

Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR Pavel Sokolov-Skalya is a painter, who is famous, first and foremost, as author of subject paintings on the revolution-related topic. His painting 'Taking of the Winter Palace' (1939) became a classical work of social realism. Today, unfortunately, posters by him are not often remembered. It should be noted, however, that he created over 300 works for Tass Windows; among them the magnificent poster «For Chelyuskintsy and the Heroic Pilots Who Saved Them», which is presented at the exhibition.
