Auction house “Sovcom” is holding a large auction of Russian paintings and graphic works. It includes more than 160 lots.Few classical painting at the turn XIX-XX centuries, a solid block of the Soviet era works and a little bit of contemporary art. Despite the expectations, the most expensive work doesn’t refer to the classic but to rotting socialism itself. It’s a large work «Creation» by Yuri Pimenov. It’s a late work, made in 1973 but we still can recognize the hand of «New Moscow» author: monumental and cinematic at the same time, artist’s favorite image of woman (here she’s got narrow hips and funny «soldier’s» tan), the ability to turn a snatched life moment into a hymn to something beautiful. Manner, however is different from what it was in the 1930s., dense, dark and heavy. The painting was at Sotheby's last year and now it’s in Moscow with an estimate price $ 200 000 – 250 000. For example, in the coming Sotheby's auction in New York a large canvas named «May Day» representing female workers fastening flag on one of Stalin’s exhibitions was priced $ 400 000 – 600 000. Among the paintings of the beginning of XX century stands out Igor Grabar’s landscape with the most «correct» for the master themes – a path trodden it wet snow, gates and a house corner. This work, created in 1904 was estimated at $ 85 000 -135 000. In contemporary section – «Yacht club» (2009) by Anatoliy Gankevich from Odessa. Due to the fact that artist pretends to be a realism monumentalist and oil painting also pretends to be a mosaic, the scene of Soviet people joyful celebration becomes completely surrealistic.
