«Russian and Western European art» at «Sovcom» auction. AFISHA. Kommersant – Weekend, № 13 (210), 15.04.2011.

The upcoming auction on the 21st of April is the biggest for «SOVCOM» auction house in this Spring season. It covers a century and a half of Russian art (from the end of the 19th till the beginning of the 21st centuries) and also a small addition of European names. In «Classical» Russian paintings there are two paintings with estimate price of 200000-300000$. One is «official» seascape representing the meeting of Russian and German imperial yachts during Kronstadt raid in 1897. The painting was created by Nikolay Gritsenko probably to be presented to Emperor Wilhelm II who came to discuss Russian and German politics at the Far East with Emperor Nicholas II. The seascape is lyrical and even intimate, it was created by a teacher of Nikolai Gritsenko, Lev Lagorio. It shows us the bay at warm Black sea, where two ladies are collecting either pebbles, or shells at the coast. The next section and phase in the history of Russian art is modernism. It is represented by the work of Nikolay Tarkhov «Pear Blossoms» (1911, 250000-300000$). Artist always had a passion for picturing trees and his pear tree is covered with drifts of white flowers. Painting comes from the collection of Petit Palais in Geneva and was exhibited at the artist's personal exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery. Socialist realism designated by Alexander Deineka’s sketch «Reconstruction of Rostselmash». Clarity and generalized forms, restrained color, low point of view on the shape of women working on the scaffolds gives this small gouache work the quality of the monumental paintings(estimate: 80000-150000$). There will be also presented pictures of the 1960s representatives of «severe» style and 1970s conceptualists, particularly a list with text from Ilya Kabakov’s albums (1979, 10000-15000$).
