Menk Vladimir Karlovich (1856–1920)

Russian landscape artist and graphic artist, teacher. In 1876-1878 he studied at the drawing school of the TPH in St. Petersburg, from which he graduated with a silver medal. In 1878-1881 he was a volunteer student at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Took lessons from I.I. Shishkin and I.N. Kramskoy. In 1879 Menck was awarded a large silver medal. In 1880, for the painting “Morning in the Swamp” he received the second TPH prize (later this work was acquired by P. Tretyakov). Since 1880, he was exhibited at exhibitions of the TPH, TPHV (1882-1911), MOLKH (1894-1910), IAH (1896, 1898), as well as international exhibitions in Berlin (1902), London (1911), Venice (1914). Since 1886 he lived in Kyiv. Traveled around Crimea and the Caucasus. Made trips to Austria, Germany, Italy. Participated in Kyiv in the paintings of the Vladimir Cathedral. Since 1892 he taught at the Fundukleevskaya gymnasium, in 1896-1920 - at the Kyiv drawing school of N. Murashko. Menk was one of the initiators of the creation of the Kyiv Art School. The artist's works are kept in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Odessa Art Museum.
