Ovechkin Nikolay Vasilievich (1929, Novoshakhtinsk, North Caucasus region - 1993, Moscow)

Soviet, Russian artist-painter, battle painter, teacher. People's Artist of the USSR (1985). Laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after. T.G. Shevchenko (1979). In 1945 he studied at the Moscow Central Art and Industrial School, in 1945-1950 - at the secondary art school at the Institute. IN AND. Surikov. In 1956 he entered the Moscow State Art Institute. IN AND. Surikov, who graduated in 1961. The artist’s life and work were closely connected with the Don and Novocherkassk. He worked at secondary school No. 10 in Novocherkassk, where he taught drawing and drafting. In 1961, he headed the city art studio, which was opened in the 1920s by M. B. Grekov for children and inmates of orphanages. He also worked at the Department of Architecture at the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute. In 1964 he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR and the Studio of Military Artists named after M. B. Grekov. In 1968, the artist was awarded a gold medal named after M.B. Grekov for his participation in recreating the panorama of F.A. Rubo "Battle of Borodino". In 1976, he was awarded a gold medal by the USSR Academy of Arts for his diorama “The Battle of the Dnieper.” He was the author and leader of the work on creating the panorama “The Pleven Epic” and was awarded the Order of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, 1st degree, and the title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Pleven.” The dioramas “Battle of Moscow” and “Battle of Stalingrad” were created by the artist for the Kyiv State Museum of the Great Patriotic War. The artist’s personal exhibitions took place: 1963 - Novocherkassk; 1966 - Rostov-on-Don; 1979 - Moscow.
