Personal Exhibition Boris Smotrov «Festival of colour». 10–24 of February 2011.

The happiest artist is the one who succeed in finding his own unique artistic language, who managed to get “his track” to improve and develop. Boris Petrovich Smotrov is the one from the category of pioneers whose work is based on deeply perceived traditions of Russian and world art. The harmony of his paintings is built on inseparable connection of man and cosmos embodied in the everyday things, the realities of nature, daily work and celebrations of this world, where simple things become symbols, the mouthpieces of fundamental principles of the universe. The artist said that the current style did not emerge at once - it was preceded by many years of searching. "I was constantly worried about the question - what am I going to show to my son? First, I found a patchwork quilt in the attic. After that I made a montage with this quilt and a photo and soon this form (colored rags characters that turn into the spatial illusion) started to flow from work into work". Pictures of Boris Petrovich Smotrov are like the organ fugues transferred into the colors. And the main sound among the others remains red. “Take the red colour away or replace it with another and you will loose the energy which is inherent in my works”. When you are looking at Smotrov’s paintings you are able to catch skillful contraction, pacifying the spontaneous folk paganism with the Orthodox ethics and God-given beauty. You can search for the roots of the artist in painting he is fond of: I. Argunova, A.Venetsianov, V. Surikov and also the masters of the Russian avant-garde, especially in the later experiments of Kazimir Malevich. However, there are no hint of imitation and conscious orientation to existing designs in his works. The most important task of his paintings, the exhibition concept is defined by the artist as follows: “Joining in the soul of the artist of the visible, real and the relative worlds, of intangible, leaving back thousands of years, pledged by nature at the genetic level – this is a form of my life in the painting. Sun, Light, Life, Colour - the essence of my being and creativity.” The viewer who is able to see and feel the art of Boris Smotrov is truly happy.
