Auction № 14 "Russian art of the XX century" will be held on October 20, 2016 at 19:00 in SOVCOM auction house.
The autumn auction will represent the Russian art of the 20th century: 110 lots will include both the work of the classics of the pre-revolutionary art and the paintings by the masters of Socialist realism.
Worth noting are Mstislav Dobuzhinsky’s sketches for the theatrical production “The Cossack troops under M.I. Platov in Paris”, a show from the repertoire of The Bat Cabaret Theater, which was founded by the Arts Theater actor Nikita Baliev. It has been often noted that the success of a theatre production depends to a large extent on its artistic design. Also of interest is “Maslenitsa open air celebrations” by Alexander Benois, a sketch of the scene design for Igor Stravinsky’s ballet “Petrushka”, which premiered in 1911 on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
According to what already became a tradition, the auction catalog includes a wonderful selection of the Soviet era genre paintings. “The Skiers” by Anatoly Nikich, which was displayed at the Soviet Sport exhibition of the Russian Realist Art Institute in London in 2013, is by right one of the top lots of this auction. Also of interest is “Sabbath day” by Tkachev brothers, painted during their prime creative years. The painting “Let’s have a smoke” by Lev Naroditskii is worth a special mention; its title refers to one of the most popular songs from the Great Patriotic War era.
Landscape paintings are present in immense variety: Sergey Gerasimov and Georgy Nisskii, Vladimir Stozharov and Aleksey Gritsay – the names of these artists belong to the hall of fame of the Russian art of the 20th century. Also on sale is a brilliant collection of city landscapes, from museum-level works, into which category “Morning in May at the Bolshoi Theater” by Andrey Gorskii certainly falls, to intimate views of Moscow by Sergey Pichugin and Boris Rybchenkov.
The auction catalog also contains a whole collection of portraits by eminent 20th century painters: these include “Portrait of professor Nikolai Petrovich Remizov” by Petr Konchalovsky, “A girl under an umbrella” by Aristarch Lentulov, “Portrait of the artist N.N. Zolotarev” by Evsey Moiseenko.
There is also an unusual lot in the auction catalog: the Khryusha and Stepashka puppets which were used to film the Good Night Kids show in the early 1990s.
