In 1935-1939. studies at the "Moscow Regional Pedagogical Art School named after 1905" with N.P. Krymova, N.N. Gorelova, A.P. Chirkova, S.I. Frolova. At the end of the school I.E. Grabar and A.M. Gerasimov is selected by N.I. Barchenkova for admission without exams to the Moscow State Art Institute. IN AND. Surikov. However, due to the start of the Second World War, N.I. Barchenkov returns to Zagorsk, where he works as a poster artist, making, among other things, copies of posters from TASS Window samples.
In 1943, together with S.Ya. Dunchev, N.Ya. Belyaev and others organizes the Zagorsk professional organization of artists. Works at the Zagorsk Art and Industrial Workshop (ZKhPM). In 1945, he fruitfully collaborated with members of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, A.I. Laktionov, Ts.S. Stoyanov, V.P. Trofimov, who during this period work in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. In 1948, he arrived in the "first stream" at the "Academic Dacha named after I.E. Repin", where he worked together with A.P. Bubnov, T.G. Gaponenko and P.N. Krylov.
Since 1944 he has been a permanent participant of republican and all-Union and traveling exhibitions. In the USSR and the Russian Federation, major solo exhibitions were held in Moscow, Sergiev Posad, St. Petersburg (1953, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1998), posthumous - in 2003, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020
Since 1965, he has become a regular participant in exhibitions of Soviet art abroad: in the USA, France, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, Italy, Finland, Greece, Germany, Switzerland. The Japanese gallery "Gekkoso" is especially active in buying his works, which holds two major solo exhibitions of the artist (1978, 1980) and assigns him the status of an honorary member of the gallery. Also very popular are his works in Italy, where in 1979 he was awarded a gold medal at the fair in Bari and received the title of honorary member of the "Italian Academy of Arts". In 1984, a major solo exhibition was held in Montreal (Canada). N.I. Barchenkov also actively collaborated with the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, thanks to which his works are still in Russian embassies around the world. In 1989, he was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples for his great contribution to Soviet fine arts and the promotion of Soviet art abroad.
The artist's works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, the Museum of Political History of Russia, the State Museum and Exhibition Center "ROSIZO", the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve, the Serpukhov Museum of History and Art, the Tula Museum of Fine Arts, and many other regional museums and private collections throughout Russia and abroad.
